The Bellussera: A Legacy of Historic Viticulture

The Bellussera vine training system — also known as the Bellussi method — is a distinct cultural and historical heritage that shapes the landscape of the Piave River’s fertile floodplain.

Here, nature has been molded and enriched by centuries of human care and ingenuity, resulting in a landscape with a strong and recognizable identity. This deep connection between people and place has fostered a lasting sense of belonging among its inhabitants.

But how did the Bellussera come to be?


A Glimpse into History

In the 19th century, the countryside surrounding the Piave looked very different from today.
Most of the land was cultivated under the mezzadria system — a sharecropping arrangement in which only one-third of the harvest belonged to those who worked the vines. Families relied on multiple sources of income and sustenance to make ends meet.

At the time, two essential resources supplemented the farmers’ livelihoods: mulberry trees, used for silkworm production, and grass for feeding livestock. Meanwhile, vine growers faced a persistent enemy — peronospora, a fungal disease that attacked all the green parts of the grapevine.

To address these challenges, toward the end of the century, the Bellussi brothers of Tezze di Piave developed a new vine training system — the Bellussera.

The Bellussera System

The Bellussera represented a small, self-sustaining agricultural ecosystem.

The vines were trained in an open, elevated, and expansive form — allowing for a healthier and more abundant harvest while keeping the ground below free for pasture, providing valuable forage for animals.

Throughout the 20th century and beyond, the Bellussera became a defining feature of the Veneto landscape — the result of careful geometric design that makes it a true and early example of sustainable viticulture.

The system was characterized by a wide planting layout: wooden posts were placed 8–10 meters apart, with approximately 4 meters between rows. Each post supported four vines arranged in a cross at a height of about 3 meters, creating a distinctive lattice pattern when viewed from above.

This innovative design allowed the vines to receive more sunlight and air circulation, which improved yield and helped prevent peronospora, as the elevated canopy kept the foliage away from the damp soil where the disease thrived.

With the end of sharecropping, viticulture gradually shifted toward systems better suited to mechanized harvesting. Yet, for some producers, the charm and historical value of the Bellussera never faded.
